What Happened?
Alibaba (BABA) stock is drawing fresh attention after two separate AI announcements landed close together.
First, Alibaba’s Qwen team unveiled Qwen 3.8, a massive 2.4 trillion-parameter AI model that the company says is “second only to Fable 5,” a reference to Anthropic’s top-tier Claude model.
Alibaba hasn’t released independent benchmarks to back that claim yet, but the model is already available in preview through Alibaba’s Token Plan, its Qoder coding platform, and QoderWork productivity suite, all at a discounted 10% of standard pricing.
Alibaba also promised an open-weight release of Qwen 3.8 “soon,” though no date has been set. That would mark a shift, since the company’s top-tier Max models have historically stayed closed-source. If it happens, Qwen 3.8 would become the largest open-weight model ever released.
Separately, Alibaba stock jumped after news broke that its Qwen model will be built into Apple’s AI systems in China, covering iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS.
Chinese regulators added Apple’s AI service to an approved list that also includes homegrown providers like Huawei. That approval came after a long wait, since Apple first announced its AI plans back in 2024.

These moves come during a tense period for Chinese AI companies.
Rivals like Moonshot AI, in which Alibaba holds a 36% stake, and Zhipu AI have both released competing large models this year, intensifying the race.
Alibaba itself recently banned employees from using Anthropic’s AI tools, showing just how sensitive the U.S.-China AI rivalry has become.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Alibaba Stock
The reaction in Alibaba stock shows investors are paying close attention to the company’s AI progress, even without independent verification of Qwen 3.8’s performance claims.
The Apple partnership adds a concrete distribution channel into one of the world’s biggest phone markets, which likely explains the sharper premarket pop compared to the Qwen 3.8 news itself.

Still, the picture isn’t one-directional.
Alibaba stock actually closed down 2.14% right before the Qwen 3.8 preview dropped over the weekend, a reminder that the stock has been volatile lately.
Investors will likely wait for third-party benchmarks and a firm open-weight release date before fully pricing in Qwen 3.8’s competitive standing. For now, Alibaba stock is benefiting from a wave of AI-related headlines rather than confirmed technical proof.
