South Korea’s LG AI Research and UNESCO on July 20 launched a global online education program on AI ethics, offering free courses designed to help researchers and policymakers deploy AI responsibly.


The organizations unveiled the AI Ethics Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) at a launch event held at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO in central Seoul.


The event was attended by UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany, South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Science and ICT Minister Bae Kyung-hoon, and LG AI Research chief Lim Woo-hyung.


The launch marks the first major outcome of a partnership formed by LG AI Research and UNESCO following the AI Seoul Summit in May 2024.


The project aims to strengthen AI ethics capabilities in both the public and private sectors by identifying best practices for responsible AI development across the world.


LG AI Research said that it is the first time that a private AI research institute in South Korea has jointly led every stage of developing a global education program with a specialized United Nations agency.


The curriculum is based on UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, a global framework unanimously adopted by the organization’s 193 member states in 2021.


Rather than focusing solely on ethical principles, the program emphasizes practical skills that developers, researchers, and policymakers can apply throughout the AI lifecycle.


The free courses are being offered globally through Coursera, the online education platform founded by AI researcher Andrew Ng.


The program consists of 10 modules developed with contributions from leading academic institutions and research organizations, including Oxford Internet Institute and The Alan Turing Institute.


Alongside the launch, the organizations hosted a conference, bringing together global AI ethics scholars, representatives from South Korea’s AI Safety Institute, and executives from technology companies including Naver and Kakao.


LG AI Research and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO also announced plans to expand the initiative into hands-on training programs later this year.


The first pilot program, scheduled for the second half of 2026, will provide AI ethics training for developers and researchers in South Korea.


“AI ethics encompasses both the principles and the practices that ensure AI operates transparently and responsibly, without discriminating against people or putting them at risk,” LG AI Research CEO Lim said.


“We have reached a point where it is no longer enough to achieve global consensus on AI ethics—we must put those principles into practice across the entire AI lifecycle, from product development to service operation.”


LG AI Research drives industrial AI innovation


Established in 2020, LG AI Research has quickly become a cornerstone of South Korea’s AI ecosystem, building a reputation through its proprietary EXAONE family of large language models.


Following the debut of the original EXAONE model in 2021, the institute has steadily broadened its AI portfolio beyond conversational models.


Among its flagship initiatives is EXAONE Discovery, an AI platform developed to accelerate research in areas such as advanced materials and drug development.


Rather than replacing scientists, the system is designed to work alongside them by analyzing vast datasets, proposing research directions, and helping prioritize the most promising compounds and materials for further investigation.


According to LG, the platform can substantially reduce the time and cost associated with the early stages of pharmaceutical research, where identifying viable drug candidates has traditionally required years of experimentation and significant investment.


Unlike many AI companies whose businesses revolve primarily around consumer-facing software, LG AI Research has concentrated on applying AI to manufacturing and enterprise operations.


Its technologies are being integrated throughout the LG Group, supporting businesses ranging from batteries and chemicals to telecommunications, home appliances, and other advanced industries.


“The scope of AI applications will continue to broaden across industries both in South Korea and overseas,” said Yoon Suk-bin, a professor at Sogang University.


“In that sense, we are required to come up with educational programs to ensure the proper applications of AI.”
