City of Fargo warns public of scam email impersonating city officials | Crime News

FARGO — The City of Fargo is notifying the public that a scam email is being sent by individuals posing as City of Fargo officials.

The city says the fraudulent emails appear to come from a government email address and are signed as if they were sent by the Planning Commission Chair. The fraudulent emails refer to an application for a raffle permit.

According to the city, raffle permits are administered by the Auditor’s Office, not the Planning Commission.

The city says they are working with their IT department as well as the Fargo Police Department to address the matter.

City officials advice anyone who receives an unexpected message claiming to be from the City of Fargo to follow these precautions:

  • Do not reply to the message or engage with the sender.
  • Do not click on links or open attachments.
  • Do not send money or provide personal or financial information.
  • Verify the request independently by contacting the City using the phone numbers or contact information on the official City of Fargo website or through other verified City communications. Do not use contact information provided in a suspicious message.

The city says anyone who believes they have responded to the fraudulent message, or shared financial or personal information should contact their financial institution immediately, and to report the incident to Fargo Police at 701-235-4493.
