Australia AI Safety Institute to help protect the nation from catastrophic artificial intelligence risks


The government’s new AI Safety Institute will act as an early warning system to identify and protect Australia from rapidly evolving artificial intelligence risks that could cause existential or catastrophic harm, says the body’s recently appointed chief.

In some of her first public remarks since taking up the role in May, Kate Conroy, an expert in AI ethics and risks, said the institute would work with the Australian Signals Directorate and the CSIRO to monitor emerging AI developments and test frontier AI models and their applications.
