Why are cat memes still one of the internet’s greatest inventions?
The internet moves on from things ridiculously fast. One week, everyone is talking about something, and a month later, nobody remembers it existed. Apps change, trends disappear, and viral moments get replaced by new ones almost immediately. Yet somehow cat memes just keep hanging around. No matter how much the online world changes, people still lose their minds over a cat doing something weird.
Honestly, it probably helps that cats act like they have absolutely nothing to prove. Dogs usually seem excited to be included in whatever you’re doing. Cats, on the other hand, often look mildly annoyed that you exist in their space at all. They’ll spend twenty minutes begging for attention, then walk away the second they get it. They’ll ignore the expensive bed you bought and sleep in the shipping box instead. Half the comedy comes from the fact that none of it appears intentional.
What’s funny is that even people who don’t own cats usually understand the joke. You don’t need to have a cat to appreciate an animal randomly sprinting through the house at 3 a.m. for reasons known only to itself. One minute, they’re asleep in a patch of sunlight, completely peaceful. Next they’re flying off the couch as they’ve just remembered an urgent appointment. There’s never any explanation, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it funny.
A lot of cat memes work because cats somehow manage to express every human emotion without saying a word. They can look exhausted, offended, confused, irritated, dramatic, or completely checked out. Sometimes all in the same picture. People see those expressions and immediately think, “Yep, that’s exactly how I felt during that meeting.”
And after all these years, cat memes still do what they’ve always done: give people something dumb to laugh at for a few seconds. No complicated context. No long explanation. Just a cat making a questionable decision and thousands of people collectively agreeing that it’s hilarious. For something so simple, it’s surprisingly effective.
