Pet safety: extreme heat can put pets at risk – ABC 6 News

(ABC 6 News)–With dangerous heat across the region, experts are urging pet owners to take extra precautions.

Make sure pets always have access to shade and cool, fresh water while outside, and avoid walking them during the hottest part of the day. Some breeds can overheat quickly in extreme temperatures.

Before taking your pet for a walk, test the pavement by placing your hand on it for 30 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

If your pet shows signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting or weakness, move them to a cool place and contact a veterinarian.
