LACS invites residents to host shelter pets for sleepovers

This summer, Laredo Animal Care Services is launching a new foster initiative aimed at giving shelter pets a break from kennel life while helping them become more socialized and visible to potential adopters.

The program, called Pajamas & Paws Sleepover, launched June 15 and invites residents to take a shelter pet home for a one-night sleepover or a weekend getaway from the shelter environment.

“A night away from the shelter gives them a chance to relax, decompress, and enjoy the comforts of a home environment,” LACS said. “These mini-vacations help reduce stress and allow their true personalities to shine.”

Several animals have already participated in the program.

Among them was Stacie, a kitten who spent time curled up in colorful blankets during her sleepover.

“She is the best cat ever! She’s so calm and friendly. She doesn’t bite and she doesn’t really scratch unless she’s playing! I would have loved to keep her if I could!” her foster wrote.

Another shelter resident, Percy, also got the chance to spend time outside the shelter.

“Percy was obviously an indoor dog some time in his life. He is very gentle and loving, enjoys belly rubs and cuddling,” his foster wrote. “Enjoyed his bath and did well on car rides. Never made a fuss or chewed anything up. Ate well and enjoyed being around people. Did well indoors and slept overnight in his kennel well. Will make a family very happy.”

LACS hopes the program will not only reduce stress for shelter animals but also increase adoption opportunities by allowing pets to showcase their personalities in a home setting.

Additional pets are available for Pajamas & Paws sleepovers and may ultimately find permanent homes through the program.

Those interested in participating can visit Laredo Animal Care Services at 5202 Maher Ave. from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or call 956-625-1860 for more information.
