SHREVEPORT, La. — The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an email scam where tricksters impersonate Sheriff Henry Whitehorn to steal money.
Several people reported getting emails that seem to come from Sheriff Henry Whitehorn asking if their schedule is open. If a person replies or clicks a link, they are told to buy gift cards and send the card numbers to the scammer.
The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office says Whitehorn and agency members will never ask for gift cards, money transfers, or financial details through email, text, or social media.
Residents should be careful with unexpected messages. Scammers fake email addresses and names to look legitimate, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities suggest these safety guidelines:
-
Do not click on suspicious links or attachments.
-
Do not buy gift cards for anyone claiming to represent law enforcement.
-
Verify messages by calling the agency directly at an official phone number.
-
Report scam attempts to local law enforcement.
Anyone targeted by this scam should call the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office at (318) 675-2170.
