The Town of Gananoque is warning vendors and applicants to remain cautious after reports of fraudulent emails targeting those connected to the Gananoque Farmers’ and Craft Market.
Town officials said at least one vendor recently received a fake email falsely claiming they had been accepted into the market and requesting payment through an email address not connected to the municipality.
The town is reminding vendors that all official market communication will only come from the email address [email protected].
Officials are encouraging residents and vendors to carefully verify sender email addresses and avoid sending payments or personal information in response to suspicious messages.
Anyone uncertain about the legitimacy of a communication is advised to contact the town directly before responding.
Municipal officials said reporting fraudulent emails can help prevent others from becoming victims of scams.
The warning comes as preparations continue for the upcoming farmers’ market season, which is expected to return to downtown Gananoque later this year.
