Life Kicking You in the Teeth.
So there I was. Coffee in hand (of course). Feeling productive and ready to conquer the Internet like a caffeinated wizard once more! And then…
And then Life said, “Gnope! Let’s REALLY mess up your day, woohoo!”
My spouse and I had one of those giant, painful misunderstandings that starts out tiny and then stomps through the house like a moose in work boots. Eventually it felt like we were standing in the same room yet somehow living on different planets.
I said something I *thought* was practical. My spouse heard something instead that came across as hurtful. Then my spouse responded from that hurt, and all *I* heard was… criticism.
Lovely! Now we had ourselves a full emotional traffic jam!
Argh.
But you know *why* it blossomed into Godzilla decided Tokyo was a tasty little snack?
We weren’t listening to each other. We were both too busy loading our next sentence, defending our own side, and talking at each other instead of hearing what was actually being said.
Then the husband *stopped* and asked, “Tell me what you heard me say.”
That changed everything.
Because once we slowed down and truly listened, the whole mess started to unravel. I heard the hurt under my spouse’s tone. My spouse heard the hurt under mine. Nobody was trying to win anymore. We were finally trying to understand.
And that was the fix. Not louder words, mind you, nor better arguments… just plain old magnificent *listening*. And it made all the difference!
It’s funny (in a very sad way) how even people who have been married more than 30 years will still have problems like this but hey.
We’re only human. <3
