Deputies warn of email scam targeting Anderson County residents

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of potential scam emails claiming to be from the Anderson County Planning and Zoning Commission.

According to officials, Anderson County residents who have submitted requests to the County Council for community funding may be receiving fraudulent emails in response to their requests. The emails appear legitimate, using Anderson County letterhead and official titles. The message states that the funding request has been approved, but requires the recipient to submit payment to the county before funds can be released.

This is not how Anderson County Planning and Zoning or the County Council conducts business.

Residents are asked to keep the following tips in mind:

  • Official County emails will come from an “@andersoncountysc.org” address.
  • Contact Anderson County directly at 864-260-4000 to confirm the legitimacy of any correspondence.
  • Any payments to Anderson County are handled only through Certified Mail or the official County Portal, which are secure and trusted payment methods.

Anyone who believes they have received a scam email should report it to the sheriff’s office immediately by calling 864-260-4400 and referencing case number 2026-01489.
