What is the admin nights TikTok trend and can it save money?

The basic premise is related to personal finance, where you meet up with your friends to get through all your tedious bits of admin.

It provides an opportunity to get all these bits done in one go, with the idea that you all help each other out if needed.

There can be a collective sense of achievement by assisting each other in being productive.

Can admin nights help save you money?

Lora Rowley, personal finance expert at Starling Bank, has shared that money-related topics make up a huge part of our usual admin.

As a result, there could be an opportunity to make some savings on these admin nights.

She shared: “This could include setting up a budget, which could help you to manage your finances and allocate money into different spaces, managing different bills and subscriptions, and seeing if there are any subscriptions you don’t need or want to cancel.

“This could even be a great opportunity to see what savings you have to work with, check in on your pension, and to assess if there’s any opportunities to make your money work harder for you – such as putting it into a higher interest savings account or ISA.

“While the degree that you actively talk about your finances with your friends depends on your sense of comfort and closeness with those invited to the admin night, it’s still a great opportunity to at least do some research into some steps you could take to become good with money, either at the next admin night, or in your own time.”

Financial Times consumer editor Claer Barrett is another person who has championed the concept, trying it out with her colleagues for an hour after work.

In an article for the publication, she said the “shared accountability” really helped and that the group were soon “vibing with a sense of collective achievement”.

Some of the group discussed bigger life admin tasks like pensions, while others talked about the best ways of budgeting.

How to make the most of admin nights

Lora advocates embracing the social part of admin nights, with relaxing music and snacks.

She added: “You can also set some structure for the evening, such as allocating 30 min periods for admin work with some social breaks between them.

“I’d also really recommend coming armed with a list of what exactly you want to work on in the evening, and you could separate this into the essentials and into anything you might like to work on if you’re feeling in the groove after finishing off the big stuff.

“The admin night doesn’t only have to be focused on admin. For example, we’re much more likely to do something if we’ve got a nice reward in sight, so you could all aim to bring some food to share once you’ve all ticked off your list.

“This allows you to all enjoy the collective sense of achievement, continue the catch-up, and have some yummy food.”
