WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Wilmington Police Department (WPD) is warning the public of a phishing email scam in the area.
According to WPD, scammers are sending emails with fake documents that look like city agency invoices and demanding money to be wired to them.
WPD says warning signs of phishing emails include:
- Sender’s address looks suspicious or slightly misspelled
- Urges immediate action
- Contains spelling or grammatical errors not typical of professional communication
- Include links or attachments that seem unrelated, unexpected, or ask for personal information
- Claims to be from an agency or company demanding payment by wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency
If you receive an email that may be a scam, WPD suggests the following tips:
- Do not click any links or open attachments
- Do not reply to the sender
- Verify the sender
- Block the sender’s address in your email settings
- Delete the message from your inbox and trash folder
- Report the scam here or forward the email to reportphishing@apwg.org
- If you sent money or shared personal information, contact your bank immediately and make a police report
WPD advises Wilmington residents to stay vigilant against scams and safeguard their personal information.
