Anderson County officials are warning residents about a scam operation.
According to officials, a planning department customer received fraudulent invoices via email with instructions to wire payment to a specific web address.
Officials pointed out in the warning issued May 19 that the planning department does not generally use wire transfers as a payment method, and residents should be wary of any wire transfer request.
Wire payments are generally accepted only for large sums of money and are arranged by the Anderson County treasurer’s office.
Officials urged residents to remain vigilant and verify any suspicious communications.
How to spot scams?
Residents can spot scams by examining the sender’s email address.
Emails originating from a “@usa.com” domain should raise suspicion, as authentic communications from Anderson County will use the “@andersoncountysc.org” domain.
Anyone who has received a suspicious email purporting to be from Anderson County should call the appropriate county office to verify authenticity.
If you have been a scam victim, contact the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office at (864) 260-4400.
