Dani Gibbons Takes on New Role at DOD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office HS Today


Dani Gibbons has assumed the role of Senior Technical Advisor for AI Ethics & Risks at the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO). The appointment follows nearly a year as Deputy Division Chief within the same office.

In the Deputy Division Chief position, Gibbons was responsible for executing the Department’s Responsible AI (RAI) strategy. This included the development of technical tools, assessments, best practices, and policy guidance to operationalize the DoD AI Ethical Principles. Gibbons led efforts to validate and deploy the RAI Toolkit, particularly in the context of testing AI-enabled weapons systems, and managed budget and resource allocation across the RAI portfolio.

Gibbons also represented the United States on NATO’s Responsible AI board and oversaw interagency and international partnerships focused on integrating responsible AI practices across operational contexts.

Prior to joining the CDAO, Gibbons served more than eight years at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in various leadership roles. As Division Chief, Gibbons managed global operations for approximately 60 analysts and supported regional intelligence for senior defense officials. Gibbons also served as Acting Deputy for Analysis during crisis operations and led talent development initiatives for advanced analytics officers.

From 2018 to 2021, Gibbons was Branch Chief for Advanced Methods Governance and Policy at DIA, where responsibilities included evaluating data science, AI, and machine learning applications for intelligence purposes and coordinating with research institutions and federal partners.

Earlier roles include Executive Officer for the Middle East/Africa Regional Center, Congressional Liaison to both the House and Senate, and Legislative Assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gibbons also held a long-term position as an all-source intelligence analyst at DIA and served six years as a linguist in the United States Air Force.

Gibbons holds a Master’s degree in Data Science and Analytics from the University of Missouri, a Master’s in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
