As reported on News Center 7 at 6:00, scammers are getting more creative.
What used to be a call from an unknown area code asking for money has now evolved into a sophisticated barrage of pressure and intimidation, hoping people answer the phone or click random links sent by text.
V.P. of Growth at Textla Jeremy Boudinet said they saw a surprising number of people receiving scam messages about having to pay a toll or pay additional money to have their package shipped.
“Was there anything in your research that perhaps let you guys know why Ohio, more than any other state?” News Center 7’s Nick Foley asked.
“I do think there was some sort of targeting where people look for states, they may just be going by area code. ‘Here’s a state that’s got a lot of people, so we’re going to reach out to all these people.’ So, Ohio just unfortunately was on the bad end of the stick,” Boudinet said.
Boudinet said he advises Ohioans to never answer or respond to calls or texts they don’t recognize and to reach out on their own if they need to confirm or claim a payment.
