Aberdeen is the most affordable place for single people to buy a home, property website Zoopla has found.

Buyers in the city need an average of £510 a month to meet mortgage payments for a one or two bedroom home, which cost an average of £119,350, it said.

Based on a typical salary in the area, that works out at around 16% of a month’s wages.

Liverpool topped the list for England, with a one or two bedroom property costing around £130,800 – or an average of £540 for monthly mortgage payments.

That’s around 18% of a monthly salary.

In London, known for having the highest house prices in the country, even the cheapest places cost more than £1,000 a month in mortgage payments.

Havering was found to be the most affordable – but buyers still need £1,090 a month to pay off a typical one or two bedroom home costing an average of £306,480.

“For singletons, buying a first home can feel a little bit like dating and just like dating, first impressions matter,” said Daniel Copley, consumer expert at Zoopla.

“However, it’s important to dig deep into your potential new home as it’s what’s below the surface that determines long-term compatibility. Take your time and do your research before making that ultimate commitment to swipe right on a home.”

Our Money feature writer Brad Young found that being single costs £2,533 more a year in his exclusive report last week.
