California Service Corps offers 10,000 jobs statewide

“It means everything to help out and give back to the very community that raised me,” said firefighter Joshua Garcia, a former Youth Service Corps member.

SAN DIEGO — If you’re looking to make a difference in our community and make money at the same time, the California Service Corps is recruiting for 10,000 positions statewide.

A news conference was held Friday morning at Balboa Park to discuss the positions the organization is looking to fill. The group is recruiting for everything from first responders to teachers.

California Service Corps is a state program that responds to different disasters, such as the recent wildfires in Pacific Palisades. Workers helped out with finding people temporary shelter and provided emergency help.

But that’s just one category of service. They also tutor students, they help out at food banks, they help address climate change.

“We have hundreds of job openings here in San Diego, which is why we’re here recruiting with Mayor Gloria. To send a message to people in San Diego: ‘We need you, we need you to step up and we’ve created opportunities for you to do it,” said Josh Fryday, Director of GO-Serve.

Among the speakers Friday, was Josh Garcia, a former Youth Service Corps member, who is now a firefighter.

“I’m proud to be the first firefighter in my family,” he said. Garcia now serves the community he grew up in.

“Being compensated through the Employed and Empowered Internship program helped me manage financially which made a huge impact,” he said.

According to Fryday, pay varies. People in full time positions can receive a $33,000 stipend plus scholarship money. There are also education awards available for people still in school.
